The best UV flashlight will come in handy at almost any stage of your life. You are a backpacker negotiating your way around the world seeking adventure; you want to have an alternative source of light just in case you are stuck in Mongolia with no power.

Even more importantly, you want to check that your sleeping quarters for the night or the next few days is clean enough. Backlight will show stains that would normally not be visible to the naked eye.

You are a hiker seeking the thrill of the mountains, and the sun decides to take its rest before to get to your camping ground. Yes, a flashlight will certainly be handy. If it has UV lighting, you will be able to see deer trails when you are hunting dinner.

Even when at home, you need a flashlight that will see further than your fence when the dogs indicate that there could be something in the backyard.

Onto more complex uses for UV light: telling counterfeit currency. Money dealers are called to exercise caution in their dealing to prevent themselves from losing their money to scrupulous deals. Do you want to tell whether your money is the real deal? UV light is your best bet, here.

What is A UV Flashlight all about?

UV flashlights are not your ordinary flashlights. As much as they serve the expected purpose of lighting the way in pitch darkness, they also show you things that LED light would not see. A UV light is not the brightest, but it illuminates things that you would not see with ordinary light or your naked eye. Such things as stains on your hotel bedding or invisible writing on the wall can be seen clearly with UV lighting.

1. TaoTronics UV Flashlight - cheap, high wavelength, light

This flashlight is small, handheld, and fits perfectly in your palm. Some reviewers have aptly dubbed it ‘the urine detector’ for its ability to illuminate stains on carpets and other surfaces.

The manufacturer sends out the package with a pair of glasses that make it easy to see the stains. They are not mandatory, but the yellow from the glass differentiates the stains from the parts that do not need fluorescent lighting. You are able to see those stains clearer with the glasses than you would without them.

Additionally, it is not advisable to look at a UV ray with your naked eyes, as it would harm them, which is why the glasses come in handy. As a bonus, they look cool! They could actually pass for sunglasses.

  • Illumination
This flashlight from Tao Tronics has gone through a revolution to come back bigger (not in size) and better. They have increased the number of LED lights to 51 so that the flashlight illuminates more brightly.

With 51 LED lights, your food stains, pet urine on the carpet, gross bathroom stains and basically any other stain in the house becomes perfectly visible. The UV from this flashlight gives a 395nm wavelength, which is as close to ideal as you will get for home use.

  • The Make
This flashlight measures 5.8 x 2.2 x 2.2 inches and measures 6.9 ounces. This size and weight are ideal for both home use and travel. It is designed as any other flashlight out there. It uses disposable batteries and comes with three AAAs to save you the initial cost. The alkaline batteries will take up to 3 hours of continuous usage before they die on you.

PROS

  • Cheap, small and light.
  • Illuminates brightly.
  • They have a high wavelength for more visibility.

CONS

  • The disposable batteries do not last long.
  • The light is not 100% UV.

2. TaoTronics UV Flashlight - super light, affordable, bright

This flashlight from Tao Tronics is the ideal example of how good things come in small packages. It is small, and light, weighing 2.4 ounces and measuring 5.4 x 3.4 x 1.1 inches.

If you want the kind of flashlight that fits perfectly in your palm, this is it.

This flashlight is powerful in illumination, but it needs you to get closer to the floor to see the stains as well as you would like.

It does not come with a pair of glasses to protect your eyes from the UV rays, but then again its fair price would not allow for this. You can always buy the glasses separately.

Illumination

How bright is this flashlight? Quite. It has a 395nm wavelength, which is quite impressive for its size. It has 12 LEDs, which are fewer compared to others in its class, but then again that is the number that its size could accommodate. Note that the number of LED lights does not compromise the wavelength that it can handle.

TaoTronics TT-FL001 UV Flashlight uses disposable batteries. It already comes with three Duracell alkaline batteries that will last you five hours of continuous use. The problem with these disposable batteries is that they could cost you a small fortune seeing that you cannot recharge them.

The price is ideal. For the illumination that this flashlight gives, we think that it could cost way more. The one defect with it is that it is not waterproof and so you may want to use it away from liquids. It is not resistant to falls either, and so dropping it on the hard ground may result in damage.

You can use it to detect poop and urine stains, invisible stains in the bathroom, scorpions, fake notes, fake IDs, and passports.

PROS

  • Super light
  • Affordable
  • Bright

CONS

  • Quite small
  • Not waterproof

3. Lighting EVER UV Flashlight - multi-functional, more leds, durable

Light Ever is known for powerful flashlight and spotlights. This particular one is quite small and light and is ergonomically designed for easy handling. We like that it has a study string on the side for easy handling and storage when not in use.

This flashlight is light enough to bring in your backpacking and camping escapades for stain detection and scorpion hunting. 6.9 x 2.8 x 2.6 in and 9.9 ounces are a bit heavy, as you would agree.

For power, three alkaline batteries will work just fine. The manufacturer already throws in three to get you started before you can get your new batch.

The case is made of aluminum for impact resistance. A few things are for sure; you will find stains in an otherwise spotless house, and you will drop your flashlight a few times in its useful life. This is guaranteed, no matter how carefully you handle it.

It therefore helps to know that your little detective buddy can withstand a fall, or even a few. The case is pitch black and the light is purple; how is that for esthetics?

It is quite big; and as such, the surface can handle 51 LED lights and emit a 395nm wavelength.

Functionality

Because if its size, this flashlight perfect to home use and for outdoor adventures. You can use it to find stains in the bathroom, bedding, clothes, rugs, carpets, and wooden surfaces. You can also use it on currency, IDs, passports, and for medical forensics. Because it shines brightly, it is a bit hard to find urine. This piece of gear can be useful in a lot of outdoor activities like camping, hiking and trekking.

PROS

  • Multi-functional
  • More leds
  • Durable & easy to operate

CONS

  • Keep having trouble with the switch contacts getting dirty/oxide
  • High battery consuming

4. Esco-Lite UV Flashlight - waterproof, wider illumination

Hand this high-powered UV flashlight to someone who believes in their cleaning prowess and watch their faces cringe as they go through their homes.

The thing about the naked eye is that it will never see the underlying grime and so all your cleaning efforts can only go so far. It weighs 10oz, which is heavier than most, but not too bad.

This flashlight will come in handy in so many ways. Looking out for food stains in the kitchen, scorpions on the yard, pet urine on the carpet, stains on your hotel bedding, and invisible wall writings.

  • Design

It is not so different from the others on the market, but the power on this flashlight lays in the properties beyond esthetics. It has a large surface (2.2 inches) that accommodates 51 LED light with a 395nM wavelength. This means that the purple light covers a wider area and illuminates brighter than those with fewer LEDs.

The case is made of aluminum to last long and to withstand drops.

For the settings, this flashlight only has one mode. You cannot adjust the brightness for when you want to undertake tasks that need less light. But this should not affect anything, seeing that a UV flashlight is not s bright as a regular flashlight and so it is never going to be too bright to blind you.

  • Batteries
Esco-Lite Brand Flashlight uses alkaline disposable batteries. It only needs three at a time to work, and they can go for as many as 20 hours without interruption. Unlike the competition, this brand does not come with a set of batteries. The manufacturer advises removing batteries from the flashlight if it is not in use for a long time.

PROS

  • Waterproof
  • Large for wider illumination
  • Aluminum case for longer life

CONS

  • No batteries in the package
  • Quite heavy

5. UV Sight Flashlight - light, portable, quite cheap

Do you smell urine but cannot see any stain? This torch will help you illuminate your dog’s mistakes. It is small, handheld, and quite light.

This flashlight has what is meant to be an ergonomic handle, but you could easily lose grip especially with wet hands.

The manufacturer tries to make the surface a bit rugged, but it still needs precaution when handling.

It measures 3.5" x 1.25", which makes it the ideal detector to take on your mineral hunt. Yes, it can detect those small metals that the naked eye cannot see. That and dry pet poop, urine that has been stinking and driving you insane, food stains that you would otherwise not note, and any other stain in the home area.

We have seen people saying that it works excellently when repairing HVAC. Additionally, of you live in Vegas or any other location where you have scorpions, this baby will point them out. You can see them from as far as 6 feet. Thanks to its size, you can carry it to check your sleeping quarters in the tent before you lay down. Oh, you can use it on black light art too

How many LEDs does it have? 12, which illuminate a 365nm wavelength. For power, you will need 3 AAA batteries. Your first batch comes with the torch and will last you up to 8 hours of continuous working.

PROS

  • Light and portable
  • Bright enough for the home and outdoors
  • Quite cheap

CONS

  • Too small
  • Can slip out of the hand easily.

Before You Buy that UV Flashlight, Consider These

Before you go shopping, you will need to consider a few matters. You may have limited your purchase to a particular price range, but it would be important to avoid compromising on quality.

  • The Size
In almost everything, you will hear people say that size matters. That also applies to a UV flashlight. The most important determinant as far as size goes will be your usage. What do you need it for? If you need it to fit into your pocket, then you will need to consider this when buying.

The good thing is that most UV flashlights are quite small to fit perfectly in your palm. And one more note: the size does not determine its ability to illuminate.

The weight will matter too, especially if you plan to take your flashlight on trips. Luckily, most UV flashlights are lightweights, but still, anything below 6oz will serve you well.

  • Power
The LED lights on your flashlight will determine how well it lights the way. A UV flashlight with a 360nm wavelength and at least 50 LED lights will give you better visibility on the stains on your carpets and scorpions in your yard. The only downside to this is that you will be reduced to a CSI agent who sees a ‘crime scene’ wherever they look.

  • Battery Type
It should matter to you how a flashlight is powered. Is the battery rechargeable or do you use disposable batteries? Both have their pros and cons. Rechargeable batteries are ideal in this way; you will be saved the cost of buying new ones every few days.

Downside? You will need to carry a cable to charge them o the way especially if you are a backpacker or a camper. If you can get one that is rechargeable but can use the disposables batteries too, then you will find a sweet compromise.

  • Modes
You want to have the power to decide how much light you need. It would be ideal if your flashlight had different modes for high, low, and medium. That way, you get to decide how much light you need for the activity at hand.

  • Weather Proof
This is the thing about your flashlight. You will drop it enough times. No matter how much care you take, you will still drop it somehow. So, can it withstand a drop? If it cannot, you will be buying another one in a few months.

Additionally, can it withstand torrential rainfall? Your flashlight will be in protected cases most of the time, but not always especially if you need to use it outdoors in the rain. An IPX4 rated flashlight fits this bill as it can take a lot of splashing from all angles.

It’s a Wrap!

The brightest UV flashlight will bring out a lot in your house. After using one, you may never look at your abode the same way. Unfortunately, you also become too skeptical of everything. You will notice the clean floor, but your instincts will tell you otherwise. In other words, your surfaces will never be clean enough until they are UV-certified.

We like the entire range of flashlights that e have paraded, but we have the one that we feel meets a home user’s needs the best. TaoTronics UV Flashlight Black Lights is just the right size, illuminates brightly, and is priced well enough to fit in most users’ budgets. The weight is just right for those wishing to take them on outdoor expeditions.

TaoTronics TT-FL001 UV Flashlight Black Light, by the same manufacturer, comes a second for its illumination and size. The price is certainly a plus.
