Crossbow Hunting Fact Sheet

Have you ever watched The Walking Dead? If you have, then you probably have seen Daryl Dickson, the calm and collected hunter who mostly uses a crossbow to kill the walkers instead of guns. During the series he was proven to have an outstanding skill when it comes to shooting his crossbow and hunting food for survival.

Did you ever wish to be like him? Well, not that you wish for zombies to come, but have you ever planned on using a crossbow for your hunting adventures?

If you have, then you need to know first about the facts of crossbow hunting.

What is a crossbow?

A crossbow is either a weapon or hunting gear, depending on your purpose for it. It was, however, used in China as a military weapon first. Basically, it is just a modified bow and arrow - the one used in classic archery.

Unlike the typical bow and arrow, which can only be loaded during the time of need, a crossbow can be loaded with an arrow even when not in use. Its main parts are the lever (trigger) and the stock. The stock is the part that keeps the arrow in place, the lever on the other hand serves as the assistance for loading and firing.

The main advantage of using a crossbow is its convenience during firing. The typical bow and arrow weapon needs intricate force (for pulling back) for firing, a crossbow however just demands for you to release the lever.

It is also deadly accurate and the distance it can reach can be far longer that the arched tool. The only drawback is the loading - in the time that you have loaded one arrow in your crossbow; you could have fired 6 arrows using its classic counterpart.

Why was crossbow hunting restricted before?

The main reason why authorities did not permit crossbows to be used is because it is the perfect poaching weapon. In hunting, poaching means that a person hunts in a property which he or she does not have any permission to enter - in other words - the hunter is trespassing.

Remember that crossbows are silent, unlike typical rifles. Its range is also ideal as it can kill animals from a more distant position. Should a person possess a crossbow, they will have more power to encroach a property without anyone knowing about it.

If that is the case, then why is crossbow hunting permitted now?

To be honest, one of the main reasons why crossbow hunting was permitted was because of the alarming increase in the deer population. There were times when deer just become too many that it already interrupted normal operations.

First up, compared to rifles, crossbows are the much safer alternative. On top of that, there are many areas that do not allow the use of rifles - especially those areas that are already developed and people are residing near the place of hunting.

So after a lot of protests, the wishes of the hunters were finally granted and clearance for crossbows was given.

What wildlife can be hunted using the crossbow?

Regulations differ from one place to another, but most of the time, any animal can be hunted using the weapon. The only exception is the time. Sometimes there are open seasons using a specific weapon, like rifles or classic bows. You have to learn about these protocols before going ahead with your hunting plans.

Is there a dress code for crossbow hunting?

Most of the crossbow hunters have dress codes, well not really dress codes but different styles of camouflage - just so they can easily be identified as a human. The color and the style will depend on your area, but the most common is hunter orange or camouflage orange.

Can I just bring my crossbow anywhere?

An area often demands the crossbow hunters to carry their weapon with them at night, especially if it is not properly encased. Encased is the operative word and it can be achieved using different techniques.

The first is to have it inside a case that has a lock. Or it can also be wrapped in a cloth which is tied securely. Different states will have different rules.

How old should I be to be able to hunt using a crossbow?

You have to be 16 years old and above, and if you are under 18, you need to draw up the consent of your parents. Some areas even allow children as young as 10 years old, as long as they are with a capable guardian at the time of hunting.

Please note that the information mentioned here is to be your general guide, and can be used merely to set your expectations. The rules and regulations in the hunting area you prefer will be the ones you should be relying completely.

In fact, you might even need to acquire a certificate or a license that clearly states your ability to hunt using crossbows.
